16 Strijkinstrumenten klassiek / romantiek

HAYDN
String Quartets Op. 20 'Sun', Nos 4 - 6
Kodaly Quartet
The so called Sun Quartets, Opus 20, were written in 1772 and published two years later. The title is given after the title-page design of a rising sun. They form an important stage in the development of the form, which now assumes full maturity. Musical interest is divided now more equally between the four instruments.

String Quartets Op. 76 No 1 / No 2 'Fifths' / No 3 'Emperor'
Kodaly Quartet
Quartet Op. 76 No 3 has become known as the Kaiserquartett (Emperor Quartet) because of the second movement theme, Haydn's own Emperor's Hymn, written for the birthday of Emperor Franz after the composer's return from his second visit to England, where God Save the King had impressed him.

HAYDN
String Quartets Op. 76 No 4 'Sunrise' / No 5 / No 6
Kodaly Quartet
The fourth of the Op. 76 quartets has won in England the descriptive title 'The Sunrise', an ingenuouscomment on the opening of the first movement, in which the first violin opens with an ascending phrase over the sustained chord of the other instruments, its counterpart the descending phrase later proposed by the cello.

MENDELSSOHN
String Quartets Vol. 2
String Quartet 1 /String Quartet 4 / String Quartet in E Flat Major
Aurora String Quartet
Mendelssohn admired and studied Beethoven's music. There are many examples of Beethoven's influences in the symphonies, piano music, songs and chamber music. Mendelssohn studied the older master's quartets before venturing to compose a quartet himself and as a result Beethoven's quartets have found an echo in Mendelssohn's creations. (From the CD Booklet)

TCHAIKOVSKY
String Quartets Vol. 1
String Quartet 1 / String Quartet 2
New Haydn Quartet
Arguably the greatest 19th-century Russian composer, for whose music the public appears to have an insatiable appetite, Tchaikovsky had a natural gift for beautiful and deeply expressive melodies which, in his most successful works, was allied to a hoard-won and often original compositional technique.
